Scottish Independent Midwives

Natasha McDonald, BSc, RM

I studied for my degree in midwifery at Napier University in Edinburgh. Upon qualifying in February 2005 I moved to London to work with a community midwifery team who also spent time working in the hospital labour ward. This provided me with a wide variety of experience in both home and hospital settings.

Having spent a year in London the time was right for me to move home to East Lothian. I worked in Edinburgh as a hospital midwife, however this did not provide the continuity of care I had enjoyed in London. I missed attending homebirths and seeing women I knew out in community. After much consideration I realised that that only way for me to provide the care I wanted to give to women was to become an Independent Midwife.

The one to one care I offer allows me the time to really get to know the women and families in my care, and this relationship and the trust built between us helps enable women to achieve a positive birth experience. I am experienced in homebirths and waterbirths and I am happy to support these.

I live in East Lothian with my husband Alan, and our three children. I’m happy to travel up to an hour from my home.
