Scottish Independent Midwives

Jenny Patterson, BSc, RM

I qualified as a midwife in 2007. I worked as a clinical statistician for almost 12 years and then spent several years at home with my four sons. My first two sons were born in hospital, and the third and fourth were born at home. My own experience of birth, particularly the difference in home and hospital gave me the strong desire to work around birth and so I trained as a birth teacher and then a doula, but always in my heart wanted to be a midwife – which I finally to took the plunge to do in 2004.

I have a strong belief in women’s ability to birth their babies and the importance of the experience of birth. I am particularly keen to support home and waterbirths. I have spent some time in Torbay where I attended home waterbirths. I am fortunate to be working alongside and being supported by many excellent independent midwives.

I am registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and am bound by the Code of Professional Conduct and the Midwives Rules and Standards.  I am a member of the Independent Midwives Association, Association of Radical Midwives and Association for Improvements in Maternity Services.

As an Independent midwife I am happy to support women planning a homebirth and will attend as a birth support partner should transfer to hospital be necessary.  I do not currently have honorary contracts to work at any of the hospitals in Lothian or Borders but can attend as birth support advocate for women planning a hospital birth who wish continuity of care.  I am happy to travel up to an hour from my home in Edinburgh.
