I qualified as a midwife in 1988 at St. Mary's Hospital in Paddington, London. From the beginning I was committed to providing a high standard of care to women and their families. I was privileged to work with the pioneering Riverside Community Midwives to provide continuity of care to a geographical caseload. I obtained experience in home births and waterbirths both at home and in hospital. I moved back to Scotland at the end of 1996 with the eventual aim of starting to work as an Independent Midwife. Fergus arrived first, though! Although I loved working in the Riverside Teams and thought it was the only way to practice, it was only when I was pregnant myself that I really appreciated the value of having true continuity of care and carer for pregnancy, birth and afterwards. However, at present, the only way I can provide that level of service to other women is to practice outside the NHS. I want to be able to take the time to get to know a woman and her family, so that we can build up a mutual rapport and trust. I have a firm belief that women can give birth in the right environment for them with good preparation and support. I love to support home and water briths. Like Nessa, I am a Reiki Practicioner and can incorporate that in your care if you wish. I have a long-suffering and tolerant husband, Alasdair, and am the mother of two sons, Calum, born in 1994, and Fergus, born in 1998. I would usually travel up to one hour from my home in Glasgow. |
